The City

Jakarta has been called a study in contrasts: traditional and modern; rich and poor; spiritual and wordly stand side by side in this bustling metropolis. Among the 8 million people who call Jakarta home, one find representatives of the many diverse ethnic and cultural groups which shape Indonesia, a reminder of the nation’s motto: ‘Unity in Diverse’. You may have to search high and low in this multi-cultural collage to find one of the proud ethnic Jakartans, called "Orang Betawi".

Their language.Betawi Malay, has two variations, conventional Betawi Malay, spoken by elder people and bred in Jakarta, and modern Jakarta Malay, a slang form spoken by the younger generation and migrants.

Jakarta is the port of entry for many tourists and business people. It is home to a dynamic contrast between Western-style skyscrapers, modern urban life-styles and traditional Indonesian culture. It’s rapid growth into a metropolitan city reflects the economic, political, social and industrial development of the nation. In recent years, Jakarta has expanded its facilities for visitors with luxury hotels, fine restaurants, exciting nightlife and modern shopping centers. It contains many tourists attractions such as Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful ‘Indonesia in Miniature’ Park), restored colonial period buildings, island resorts in the Pula Seribu (Thousand Island), and an extensive beach recreation complex called Ancol.

Tugu Pahlawan ~ Hero's Monument

The Hero's Monument or Tugu Pahlawan is dedicated to the fallen heros of Surabaya during the Independence War of 1945-49... Although there are many military statues in and around Surabaya, the Tugu Pahlawan is certainly the most imposing... The monument stands majestically in Taman Kebonrojo in Central Suarbaya..

The Heroes Monument stands like a rocket pointed towards the moon... It is not ornate or even decorative or particularly large, but its simplicity may have been the deliberate plan of its architect to convey humble, rather than bellicose pride... Adjoining the monument is a museum where the history of the struggle of the people of Surabaya during the war are recorded and exhibited...

Stay in the Hotel Majapahit

The Majapahit was built in 1910 by the Sarkie brothers who designed the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore. We've come across lots of their hotels on our travels such as The Eastern and Oriental Hotel, Penang, the Strand, Yangon. We had never actually stayed in one until this trip and stayed in the Majapahit at a really good price. They offer lots of deals as Surabaya does not have too many tourists.

The hotel is just so tranquil and calming. Its rooms are built around courtyards filled with brightly coloured flowers and gurggling fountains. The staff are lovely and very friendly.

Outside the front door of the hotel is traffic congested chaos. inside is birdsong and trickling water.

The hotel has an interesting history. It was originally the Oranje Hotel. In 1945, as unrest was mounting and cries for independence were being heard all over Indonesia, someone made the error of raising the red, white and blue striped Dutch flag on the hotel's flag pole. The hotel was stormed , the flag was lowered and the bottom blue strip torn off turning it into a red and white Indonesian flag. Rioting ensued and the event helped earn Surabaya its nickname of City of Heroes. There is a small plaque in the hotel commemorating this event.

The hotel has beautiful old colonial style rooms, a Chinese restaurant, a lovely outdoor swimming pool and a spa.

Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park lies in the Wallacea Region of Indonesia, identified by WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area. The Park is located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores at the border of the Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTP) provinces. It includes three major islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totaling 603 km2 of land. The total size of Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 km2. Proposed extensions of 25 km2 of land (Banta Island) and 479 km2 of marine waters would bring the total surface area up to 2,321 km2. (Click on the map to enlarge - 70kB)

HISTORY :
Komodo National Park was established in 1980 and was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986. The park was initially established to conserve the unique Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), first discovered by the scientific world in 1911 by J.K.H. Van Steyn. Since then conservation goals have expanded to protecting its entire biodiversity, both marine and terrestrial.

The majority of the people in and around the Park are fishermen originally from Bima (Sumbawa), Manggarai, South Flores, and South Sulawesi. Those from South Sulawesi are from the Suku Bajau or Bugis ethnic groups. The Suku Bajau were originally nomadic and moved from location to location in the region of Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara and Maluku, to make their livelihoods. Descendents of the original people of Komodo, the Ata Modo, still live in Komodo, but there are no pure blood people left and their culture and language is slowly being integrated with the recent migrants.

Little is known of the early history of the Komodo islanders. They were subjects of the Sultanate of Bima, although the island’s remoteness from Bima meant its affairs were probably little troubled by the Sultanate other than by occasional demand for tribute.

IRON MAIDEN Totally Rocked JAKARTA

IRON MAIDEN Totally Rocked JAKARTA
Metal was in the air at Ancol Carnaval Beach, Jakarta. Black t-shirts, leather jackets and long haired fans filled the scene; and as far as the eyes could see, “Eddie” and the Iron Maiden Logo were everywhere. Ancol, Jakarta and Indonesia were in a frenzy on February 17th 2011. The long awaited “Metal prophet” had finally arrived, and the stage had been set overlooking the panoramic view of the Carnaval Beach, at Jakarta’s finest recreation park: Ancol.

Metal enthusiasts and Die Hard Troopers had gathered here long before the entrance was officially opened. Generations of fans ranging from school elders Metal Head to the not-less enthusiastic teenage fans formed a long line in front of the gate, eager to enter. An interesting scene appeared when a family of troopers brought along their teenage children and little kids to the show complete with all metal accessories. “I grew up listening to the band, and now I’m trying to introduce them to my children” said an enthusiast trooper.

The gate was finally opened at 05.00 in the afternoon; fans stormed in and sprinted to the stage, competing to get the best view of the show. As the sun slowly set, waves of troopers from all over Indonesia and beyond kept coming and growing larger by the minute. At 08.00 pm seas of thousands of Metal fans and Diehard troopers had formed in front of the stage. As the lights began to dim, the music started to play; and the show was ON.

With Raise to Remain, Austin Dickinson’s (Son of Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson) band warmed up the stage as an opening act playing Hardcore music. Soon after, the crowd went wild as Bruce Dickinson, Steve Harris, Janick Gears, Adrian Smith, Dave Murray and Nicko Mcbrain appeared on stage plunging directly into The Final Frontier song. The Grammy award winning song: Eldorado quickly followed, and troopers went crazy as the classic 2 minutes to midnight hit the playlist.

Then, Iron Maiden greeted the crowd and told them how special the night was, as it was the first time ever in history that Troopers in Indonesia and Iron Maiden finally came face to face and connected in person. “There are only you, us and the night!” said Bruce in his unique charismatic voice.

As the anthem of Maiden fans: The Trooper played on stage, Bruce put on a British military costume and waved the Union Jack in front of the hysterically jumping crowds. Adrenalin pumped faster as The Wicker man came to the scene backed by hundreds of fans chanting the chorus: “Your time will come!”

Bruce went on to address the issues of diversity and unity. From the stage, he stated that he had seen many faces of Indonesians, Malaysians, oriental Asians and Caucasians who can blend in unity. Regardless of their origin and religion they all speak the same language: Iron Maiden. On that note, Blood Brothers was played and thundering clapping was heard all across the arena.

Chills crept down the spine as thousands in the crowd chanted passionately to every note of the Fear of the Dark, a classic Iron Maiden’s song released in the 90’s.

“Scream for me, Jakarta!” Said Bruce as the crowd replied with roaring, ear deafening sounds, led to the intro of Iron Maiden. Halfway through the song, the gigantic 3 meters tall “Eddie” appeared on stage strutting and playing a guitar. Troopers went crazy to actually see the legendary mythical Iron Maiden creature running around the stage.

As the backdrop changed, The Number of the Beast and Hallowed be Thy Name, two yet other classic Maiden songs were played in front of the tiredless loyal spectators. As the finale: Running Free was played, guitarist Janick Gears went into a trance-like state , spinning his guitar around his body left and right, up and down, while his head kept shaking ; to put it simply, the guy went really nuts. Other members of the band also put up a splendid short solo as Bruce introduced them to the audience. As midnight approached, the show came to an end with Bruce telling everyone how he had enjoyed the show, and promised that Iron Maiden may return to Jakarta next year.

The show came to an end leaving eager Metal enthusiasts and Troopers still screaming for more.”Maiden! Maiden! Maiden!” was still heard when the fantastic stage set was torn down. Many still stood in front of the stage with feelings of disbelieve that they had actually just watched Iron Maiden Live in front of them. Those who still couldn’t get enough of Iron Maiden were planning to follow the band to their next destination at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana stage in Bali, where Iron Maiden will play on Sunday, 20 February.

At the stroke of midnight, crowds began to move orderly out of the Ancol Carnaval Beach, Jakarta. There was no chaos or riots or even the slightest incident or disturbance. The show started, played and ended all in a proper manner, contrary to many who believe that Metal or Rock concerts are identical with chaos. This has proven that Jakarta and Indonesia in general are a great choice in South East Asia to stage international level performances and exhibitions.
